Helpful tips on medical insurance and super bills for your first visit

FAQs

What is medical insurance?

Medical insurance is a service you pay for that helps cover the cost of doctor visits, tests, medications, and treatments when you get sick or injured. You usually pay a monthly fee (called a premium), and when you receive care, insurance helps pay part of the bill while you pay the rest. How much you pay depends on things like deductibles, copays, and whether the provider is in your insurance network. The main purpose of medical insurance is to protect you from very high medical costs.

What are superbills?

A superbill is a detailed receipt you get from a healthcare provider after a visit, especially if they don’t bill your insurance directly. It lists important information like the provider’s details, diagnosis codes, treatment codes, and how much you paid. You submit this document to your insurance company yourself to request reimbursement. If your plan covers the service, your insurer may send you money back for part of the cost.

Always best to contact your insurance provider and call the number on the back of your insurance card. Your insurance provider will confirm if a superbill will be accepted.

Will my insurance reimburse me?

Reimbursement depends on your individual plan and benefits. Many PPO plans offer out-of-network benefits, which may cover a portion of chiropractic, acupuncture, massage therapy, physical therapy, or naturopathic care after your deductible is met. Coverage, reimbursement rates, and timelines vary by insurance carrier.
